I just received a Holiday Greeting email from Google. It would appear that Pepsi is not alone in its' "cause related" marketing efforts. Google's Card

UPDATED INFO: NPR aired a story on 10/14/08 about coupon usage and how usage is on a fast and furious rise as a direct result of the current economic environment. In addition to anecdotal information, the segment featured and mega-saver, Erin Gifford who typically pays half the amount for food using coupons. Here is the link: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=94520847

I was researching my next post and came across this Google announcement. Google has launched a beta version of its' AdSense for Online Game Advertising which will serve ads in and adjacent to online games. Here the story: http://venturebeat.com/2008/10/07/google-launches-in-game-advertising-for-flash-web-games/

I experienced this in the digital world of MEEZ where I created my character and picked out her clothes (very entertaining by the way).. Some of the outfits I was sorting through had special signage telling me where I could buy the ACTUAL piece. Not quite the direct link you mention with the IBM presence in SecondLife but definitely a very interesting way for a brand to entice me to check out their “brick and mortar” operation.

I would think that the hits linked to Dark Marketing are by nature fewer in number but also more targeted and productive. Since the product is presented in a relevant environment for that consumer, and in less”noise” as you describe, it is more likely to turn into a lead and eventually a sale. Any indication of what the closing rate (of sales) or the recall rate (of a brand, product..) is with such Marketing?

Laetitia,
Good comment, thanks! I'll see if I can dig up any data for closing rates on product integration(PI) campaigns. It's likely nebulous since much of PI is meant to affect an "image" rather than a direct, dotted line, sale. But then with your Meeze example, that clothing sponsor likely has a way to track back to "Meeze" as the "lead source".

Your goal while going through the drive-thru is to get a food fast, not to experience a meaningful social interaction. And those processes while improving on speed and reducing cost do not always contribute to a high quality product (taste, smell, texture etc..).

So technology is key when speed and convenience are the main benefits targeted. One thing I wonder is how does technology apply when quality of 1) human interaction and 2) product is the main benefit targeted?
